शक्तिपात में गुरु अपने शिष्यों में जिस आध्यात्मिक शक्ति का संचार करता है, वह शक्ति क्या है और कैसी है, उसका रूप कैसा है और वह कहांसे तथा किस प्रकार उत्पन्न होती है, शिष्यमें किस प्रकार गिराई जाती है और वह शरीर के बाहर कैसे आती जाती है।
आजकल लोगों की ये धारणा हो गई है कि "योग का साधन" केवल उग्रतपस्या युक्त गृह त्यागी ही कर सकते हैं। कोई भी भारतीय इस बात से अनभिज्ञ नहीं है कि हमारे पूर्वजों ने किस प्रकार गृहस्थ धर्मका पालन करते हुए भी योगकी उच्चावस्था को प्राप्त किया था।
स्मरण रहे कि शक्तिपात और मेस्मरीज्म में बहुत बड़ा अंतर हैं। जहां मेस्मरीज्म में कर्ता सबजेक्ट को अपने प्रभाव से संज्ञाशून्य करके उससे अपनी इच्छानुसार कार्य कराता है फिर ऐसे कार्य बहुधा स्वार्थसाधन के अतिरिक्त परमार्थ से कोसों दूर होते हैं और कर्त्ताका प्रभाव हटते ही मीडियम साधारण दशासे भी गिर जाता है। वह मेस्मराइजर के प्रति घृणा करने लगता है और उससे भयभीत रहता है।
