The answer to this question has remained the same for thousands of years. The same three problems have been haunting China in the twentieth century, India in the Middle Ages, and ancient Egypt. Famine, pestilence and war were always at the top of the list. Generations of human beings have prayed to every god, angel, and saint, and invented endless tools, institutions, and social systems, but millions continue to die from hunger, pestilence, and violence. Many thinkers and prophets concluded that famine, pestilence, and war are surely either part of God's cosmic plan or part of our imperfect nature, and that only the end of time will free us from them.
Yet at the dawn of the third millennium, humanity is waking up to an astonishing realization. Most people rarely think about it, but in the last few decades we have succeeded in curbing famine, pestilence, and war. These problems have not been completely solved, of course, but they have been transformed from incomprehensible and uncontrollable forces of nature into challenges that can be met. We no longer need to pray to a god or saint to be relieved of them. We know exactly what we must do to prevent famine, pestilence, and war, and we usually succeed in doing it.
Of course, there are still significant failures, but in the face of such failures, we no longer shrug our shoulders and say, 'This is how it happens in our unfinished world' or 'whatever God wants will happen'. Instead, when famine, pestilence, or war gets out of our control, we feel that someone must have done something wrong, set up a commission of inquiry, and promise ourselves that next time we will do something better.

तीसरी सहस्राब्दी के उषाकाल में मनुष्यता अँगड़ाई लेती हुई और अपनी आँखें मलती हुई जाग उठी है। कुछ डरावने दुःस्वप्नों के अवशेष अभी भी उसके दिमाग़ में मँडरा रहे हैं। 'कँटीले तार जैसी कोई चीज़ थी, और विशाल कुकुरमुत्तेनुमा बादल थे। आह, अच्छा है कि वह महज़ एक बुरा सपना था'। गुसलख़ाने में जाकर मनुष्यता अपना चेहरा धोती है, आईने में अपनी झुर्रियों को जाँचती है, एक कप कॉफ़ी तैयार करती है और डायरी खोलती है। 'देखते हैं, आज क्या करना है'।
इस सवाल का जवाब हज़ारों सालों से जस का तस बना रहा है। वही तीन समस्याएँ बीसवीं सदी के चीन, मध्ययुग के हिन्दुस्तान और प्राचीन मिस्र को सताती रही हैं। अकाल, महामारी और युद्ध फेहरिस्त में हमेशा सबसे ऊपर हुआ करते थे। मनुष्यों ने पीढ़ी-दर-पीढ़ी हर देवता, देवदूत और सन्त से प्रार्थना की है, और अन्तहीन औज़ारों, संस्थाओं और सामाजिक व्यवस्थाओं का आविष्कार किया है, लेकिन भूख, महामारियों और हिंसा से लाखों की संख्या में उनका मरना जारी रहा है। अनेक विचारकों और भविष्यवक्ताओं ने यह निष्कर्ष निकाला कि अकाल, महामारी, और युद्ध निश्चय ही या तो ईश्वर की ब्रह्माण्डीय योजना का अभिन्न अंग हैं या हमारी अपूर्ण प्रकृति का अंग हैं, और समय का अन्त ही हमें इनसे मुक्त कर सकेगा।
तब भी तीसरी सहस्राब्दी की भोर में मनुष्यता एक विस्मयकारी बोध के साथ जाग रही है। ज़्यादातर लोग इसके बारे में शायद ही कभी सोचते हैं, लेकिन पिछले कुछ दशकों में हम अकाल, महामारी और युद्ध पर लगाम कसने में कामयाब रहे हैं। निश्चय ही ये समस्याएँ पूरी तरह से हल नहीं हुई हैं, लेकिन उनको प्रकृति की अबूझ और बेक़ाबू शक्तियों से ऐसी चुनौतियों में तो बदल ही लिया गया है, जिनका सामना किया जा सकता है। हमें उनसे मुक्ति पाने के लिए किसी देवता या सन्त से प्रार्थना करने की ज़रूरत नहीं रह गई है। हम अच्छी तरह से जानते हैं कि अकाल, महामारी और युद्ध को रोकने के लिए हमें क्या करना चाहिए और हम आमतौर से यह करने में कामयाब होते हैं।
सही है कि अभी भी उल्लेखनीय नाकामयाबियाँ बरक़रार हैं, लेकिन इस तरह की नाकामयाबियों का मुक़ाबला करते हुए हम अब अपने कन्धे झटककर यह नहीं कहते कि 'हमारी अधूरी दुनिया में ऐसा ही होता है' या 'ईश्वर जो चाहता है, वह तो होकर ही रहेगा'। इसकी बजाय जब अकाल, महामारी या युद्ध हमारे नियन्त्रण से बाहर हो जाते हैं, तो हमें लगता है कि निश्चय ही किसी न किसी ने कोई गड़बड़ की होगी, हम जाँच आयोग बैठाते हैं, और ख़ुद से वादा करते हैं कि अगली बार हम बेहतर कुछ करेंगे।
