Those who act on command are medium and those who do not act according to the will of the Guru even after understanding the intention of the Guru and hearing the command are called Adham.
The wise man understands the merits and demerits of both credit and dearness and distinguishes between them, and like a swan with discrimination between water and milk, he renounces the dear and accepts the credit. But fools 'preyo mando yogakshemad vrinite'-for the safety of yoga, that is, for the protection of the obtained wife, son, wealth, etc., and for the attainment of the unattained enjoyable things, they take the beloved.

उपनिषद् हमारी वह अमूल्य निधि है, जिसमें संरक्षित विविध ज्ञान-विज्ञानमयी अचिन्त्य रत्नराशि की निर्मल सच्चिदानन्दमयी ज्योति- का एक कण प्राप्त करने के लिये समस्त संसारके तत्त्वज्ञ श्रद्धापूर्वक सिर अखण्ड का और हाथ पसारे खड़े हैं। उपनिषदों में उस कल्याणमय ज्ञान- का अखण्ड और अनन्त प्रकाश है, जो घोर क्लेशमयी और अन्धकारमयी भवाटवी में भ्रमते हुए जीव को सहसा उससे निकालकर नित्य निर्बाध ज्योतिर्मयी और पूर्णानन्दमयी ब्रह्मसत्ता में पहुँचा देता है।
पिता के क्रोधभरे वचन सुनकर नचिकेता सोचने लगा कि शिष्य और पुत्रोंकी तीन श्रेणियाँ हुआ करती हैं--उत्तम, मध्यम और अधम । जो गुरु का अभिप्राय समझकर उसकी आज्ञा की कोई प्रतीक्षा किये बिना ही सेवा करने लगते हैं वे उत्तम हैं। जो आज्ञा पाने पर कार्य करते हैं वे मध्यम हैं और जो गुरु का अभिप्राय समझ लेने और आज्ञा सुन लेने पर भी गुरु के इच्छानुसार कार्य नहीं करते, वे अधम कहलाते हैं।
श्रेय और प्रेय दोनों में से मनुष्य चाहे जिसको ग्रहण कर सकता है बुद्धिमान् पुरुष श्रेय और प्रेय दोनों के गुण-दोषों को भलीभांति समझकर उनका भेद करता है और नीर-क्षीरविवेकी हंस की तरह प्रेय को त्यागकर श्रेय को ग्रहण करता है । परंतु मूर्ख लोग 'प्रेयो मन्दो योगक्षेमाद् वृणीते’-योगक्षेम के लिये यानी प्राप्त स्त्री, पुत्र, धनादिकी रक्षा और अप्राप्त भोग्य पदार्थों की प्राप्ति के लिये प्रेय को ही ग्रहण करते हैं।
