दोनों बहनें दो साल के बाद एक तीसरे नातेदार के घर मिलीं और खूब रो-धोकर खुश हुईं तो बड़ी बहन रूपकुमारी ने देखा कि छोटी बहन रामदुलारी सिर से पाँव तक गहनों से लदी हुई है, कुछ उसका रंग खुल गया है, स्वभाव में कुछ गरिमा आ गयी है और बातचीत करने में ज्यादा चतुर हो गयी है। कीमती बनारसी साड़ी और बेलदार उन्नावी मखमल के जम्पर ने उसके रूप को और भी चमका दिया-वही रामदुलारी, लडक़पन में सिर के बाल खोले, फूहड़-सी इधर-उधर खेला करती थी। अन्तिम बार रूपकुमारी ने उसे उसके विवाह में देखा था, दो साल पहले। तब भी उसकी शक्ल-सूरत में कुछ ज्यादा अन्तर न हुआ था। लम्बी तो हो गयी थी, मगर थी उतनी ही दुबली, उतनी ही फूहड़, उतनी ही मन्दबुद्धि। जरा-जरा सी बात पर रूठने वाली, मगर आज तो कुछ हालत ही और थी, जैसे कली खिल गयी हो और यह रूप इसने छिपा कहाँ रखा था? नहीं, आँखों को धोखा हो रहा है। यह रूप नहीं केवल आँखों को लुभाने की शक्ति है, रेशम और मखमल और सोने के बल पर वह रूपरेखा थोड़े ही बदल जाएगी। फिर भी आँखों में समाई जाती है। पच्चासों स्त्रियाँ जमा हैं, मगर यह आकर्षण, यह जादू और किसी में नहीं।
