यह उस युवती का मर्मस्पर्शी दस्तावेज़ है जो दूसरे विश्व युद्ध के दौरान एक यहूदी होने के नाते नाज़ी अत्याचारों की शिकार बनी. ऐन फ्रैंक का परिवार 1942 से 1944 के दरमियान एक ईमारत में स्तिथ किताबों की अलमारी के पीछे बने कुछ गुप्त कमरों में छिप कर रहा.
ऐन के तेरहवें जन्मदिन पर तोहफ़े के रूप में एक नई डायरी भेंट की गई, जिसमें वह अपने जीवन के आख़िरी दिनों तक अपनी यादें दर्ज़ करती रही. ऐन की मृत्यु 15 वर्ष की उम्र में नाज़ी कॉनसन्ट्रेशन कैम्प के टाइफस नाम की बीमारी से हुई. युद्ध समाप्त होने के पश्चात् ऐन के पिता के प्रयासों के फलस्वरूप 1947 में इस डायरी का प्रकाशन इस पुस्तक के रूप में किया गया.
युद्ध की भयावहता को दर्शाती यह पुस्तक मानवीय भावनाओं का एक आश्चर्यजनक व् दिलचस्प वृत्तांत है, जिसे द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के बचे हुए महत्वपूर्ण दस्तावेज़ों में से एक मन जाता है. मूलतः डच भाषा में लिखी गई इस पुस्तक का 60 से अधिक भाषाओँ में अनुवाद किया जा चूका है.
